Sherwin-Williams Company (SHW) Dividends

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Sherwin-Williams's dividend profile is unfavourable for a traditional income-focused value investor. The yield is low, and while the dividend is growing, its sustainability is questionable due to a high debt load and modest free cash flow generation relative to the payout.

Read full analysis
For an income-focused value investor, Sherwin-Williams presents a mixed and generally unfavourable dividend profile. The current yield of 0.99% is well below the broader sector average for basic materials, which often features higher yields. While the company has a history of growing its dividend, its sustainability is a key concern when assessed through the lens of the GoodMoat Quality Indicators. The payout appears manageable on an earnings basis, but the critical metrics of Free Cash Flow (FCF) and Balance Sheet strength raise red flags. The FCF yield is only 3.3%, indicating the cash generated relative to the company's size is modest. More importantly, the balance sheet is highly leveraged with a Debt/Equity ratio of 2.81, far exceeding the framework's favourable threshold of low/zero debt (Debt/EBITDA < 1.0x). This significant debt burden consumes cash for interest and principal payments, competing with the dividend for allocation of the company's limited free cash flow. The company's capital is likely prioritized for debt management and reinvestment in the business over substantial dividend increases. Therefore, the dividend, though likely to continue, is not the primary return vehicle and is supported by a financial structure that carries higher risk than typically favoured by conservative income investors.
