Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) Quality Analysis

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

AMD's quality profile presents a mixed picture for a value investor. While it exhibits strong gross margins and a fortress balance sheet, its current returns on capital are low and profitability is modest relative to its premium valuation. Its competitive position is underpinned by a technological moat, but this has not yet translated into high-quality financial metrics.

Assessing AMD through the GoodMoat Quality Indicators reveals a business with foundational strengths but current profitability that does not yet meet high-quality thresholds. The company's gross margin, while not provided in the current data, is historically strong in the 50-55% range, which is favourable for a hardware-centric semiconductor firm. Its balance sheet is exceptionally strong with minimal debt (Debt/Equity of 0.06), far exceeding the framework's preference for a net cash position. However, key return metrics are weak: an ROE of 6.9% and a Profit Margin of 12.5% are low, and the FCF Yield of 1.9% suggests free cash flow conversion is modest. The P/E of 82.7 indicates the market is pricing in significant future profit growth, not current quality. On moat identification, AMD scores well on criteria like Technology Leadership and Founders/Insiders, competing directly with giants like Nvidia and Intel in advanced processors. This grants it pricing power and a strategic position in critical markets like AI and data centers. Yet, this strong competitive stance has not yet filtered down to sustainably high returns on capital, which are crucial for a value investor. The current financials reflect a company in a heavy investment phase, betting its moat will lead to vastly improved profitability down the line.
