Capital One Financial Corp (COF) Dividends

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Capital One's dividend profile is a mixed picture for an income-focused value investor. The dividend appears sustainable with a low payout ratio and strong free cash flow, but the yield is below the sector average and dividend growth has been modest.

Read full analysis
Capital One's dividend sustainability is supported by a low payout ratio, estimated at approximately 22% based on the provided EPS of $4.03 and a quarterly dividend of $0.22 ($0.88 annualized). This is well below a concerning level, indicating the company retains significant earnings. The free cash flow yield of 22.2% is exceptionally strong and far exceeds the Quality Indicator threshold of a >10-15% FCF margin, providing ample coverage for the dividend and other capital uses. However, the current dividend yield of 1.50% is below the broader financial sector average, which may be less attractive for pure income seekers. Dividend growth has been modest, with the quarterly payout increasing from $0.10 to $0.22 over the past five years. From a quality perspective, the balance sheet shows moderate leverage with a Debt/Equity ratio of 0.45, which is favourable relative to the framework's check for low debt, though financial firms typically operate with higher leverage. The primary capital allocation strategy appears to be aggressive share repurchases and reinvestment into the business, as evidenced by the high FCF yield and substantial revenue growth of 51.6% YoY. For a value investor, the dividend is secure but not a primary driver of total return, which is more likely to come from business growth and capital appreciation. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
