Capital One Financial Corp (COF) Valuation

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Based on the GoodMoat Investment Framework, Capital One's valuation presents a mixed picture. While the GoodMoat Target suggests a significant margin of safety, the current P/E multiple is extremely high relative to the sector and appears disconnected from the company's reported profitability metrics, requiring careful scrutiny.

Read full analysis
The GoodMoat Target of $635.15 implies a margin of safety of over 70% from the current price of $185.23, which falls into the 'Deeply Undervalued' band (>40%) per the framework's DCF-based thresholds. This suggests a highly favourable valuation from that model's perspective. However, other key valuation metrics conflict with this view. The current P/E of 55.2 is exceptionally high, especially for a financial services company. This multiple is far above typical sector averages for credit services and is difficult to justify given the company's reported Return on Equity of 2.2% and profit margin of 7.5%. Such a high P/E for a company with single-digit profitability metrics would typically be considered an 'Extreme Valuation' red flag. The strong free cash flow yield of 22.2% is a positive signal, but the disconnect between the DCF target and traditional multiples is stark. A value investor must reconcile whether the DCF model captures unique future earnings power not reflected in current income statements, or if the high P/E indicates the market has already priced in optimistic assumptions, leaving little room for error. The analysis hinges on the credibility of the long-term earnings projections driving the DCF model versus the reality presented by current profitability.
