GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

CVS Health exhibits a mixed financial profile for a value investor. While it generates a robust 8.5% free cash flow yield and shows solid revenue growth, its profitability metrics are very weak, with a low 1.2% operating margin and a concerningly high P/E ratio of 51.8x. The balance sheet carries significant leverage with a Debt/Equity ratio of 1.06.

CVS Health's revenue growth of 8.4% YoY is a positive indicator, suggesting the business is scaling. However, the quality of that growth is questionable due to severe margin compression. The operating margin of 1.2% and profit margin of 0.4% are extremely low, failing to meet the framework's quality thresholds for any industry. This results in an ROE of just 2.4%, far below the 15-20% target for a high-quality business. The high P/E of 51.8x, against this minimal earnings base, signals the market is not pricing this as a traditional value stock. On a more favourable note, the company generates substantial free cash flow, evidenced by an 8.5% FCF yield, which supports its 3.71% dividend. Balance sheet health requires caution; a Debt/Equity ratio of 1.06 indicates leverage is present, though not extreme. For a value investor focused on high returns on capital and strong profitability, CVS's current financials present significant challenges according to the framework's Quality Indicators, despite the cash generation. The growth appears volume-driven rather than profit-accretive, which is a key distinction in the Growth Assessment. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
