Read full analysis
The financial quality of D.R. Horton is bifurcated between operational challenges and financial strength. On the quality indicators, the company shows weakness in revenue growth, which declined 9.5% YoY, and in operating leverage, as the 12.9% operating margin is likely under pressure from the sales slowdown. However, several metrics are strong. The free cash flow yield of 8.2% indicates robust cash generation relative to its market value. The balance sheet is a clear strength, with a low Debt/Equity ratio of 0.25, which is well below the framework's favourable threshold of less than 1.0x Debt/EBITDA, suggesting a substantial net cash position. Return on Equity of 13.8% is solid, though it does not meet the framework's high bar of 15-20%+ for ROIC. The current profitability, with a 9.9% net margin, is a positive. For growth assessment, the trajectory is unfavourable, with revenue growth negative and decelerating, failing the check for sustained growth above 20%. The primary growth driver appears to be cyclical housing demand rather than a durable moat advantage. In summary, the company exhibits the hallmarks of a financially disciplined operator in a cyclical downturn, with quality stemming from balance sheet resilience and cash flow, not from current growth or expanding margins.
