Eversource Energy (ES) Dividends

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Eversource Energy's dividend profile is mixed for a value investor. The 4.35% yield is attractive and the payout ratio appears sustainable, but a negative free cash flow yield and high debt level introduce significant risk to the dividend's long-term security.

Read full analysis
Eversource Energy offers a dividend yield of 4.35%, which is typically attractive and competitive within the regulated utility sector. The dividend appears sustainable from an earnings perspective, with a payout ratio of approximately 65% based on the provided EPS of $4.56 and the current quarterly dividend of $0.74 per share. This is a manageable level for a utility. However, a critical quality indicator from the investment framework raises a major concern: free cash flow (FCF). The company's FCF yield is -0.2%, indicating it is not generating the necessary cash from operations to cover capital expenditures, let alone fund the dividend. This forces heavy reliance on external financing. This is corroborated by the balance sheet strength assessment, which is unfavourable. A Debt/Equity ratio of 1.86 far exceeds the framework's preference for low/zero debt (Debt/EBITDA < 1.0x), indicating a leveraged financial position. While the company has a long history of dividend growth, the combination of negative FCF and high leverage means future increases may be constrained, and the dividend's security is dependent on the company's continued ability to access capital markets at reasonable rates. For an income-focused investor, this profile requires careful monitoring of the company's capital expenditure plans and regulatory outcomes to ensure cash flow generation improves.
