Expeditors International Of Washington Inc (EXPD) Dividends

GoodMoat Analysis

Expeditors' dividend is sustainable and supported by a fortress balance sheet, but its growth profile is limited. The current yield is modest compared to the sector, and the company prioritizes share repurchases over aggressive dividend increases.

Read full analysis
For an income-focused value investor, Expeditors International presents a stable but unspectacular dividend profile. The dividend appears highly sustainable, with a payout ratio estimated around 25-30% of earnings, well below concerning levels. This is underpinned by a strong balance sheet with low debt (Debt/Equity of 0.24) and robust free cash flow generation, evidenced by a 5.0% FCF yield. The framework's Quality Indicators for Balance Sheet and FCF would likely rate as Strong, providing a solid foundation for the payout. However, the 1.08% dividend yield is below the sector average for industrials, which often ranges between 1.5% and 3.0%. Dividend growth has been consistent but modest, typically in the low-to-mid single digits annually. The company's capital allocation strategy clearly prioritizes significant share repurchases, which have been a more substantial return of capital to shareholders than dividends. This is a rational approach given the company's high Return on Equity (34.4%), as reinvesting in its own shares at attractive valuations can be highly accretive. The recent year-over-year revenue decline of -3.3% suggests near-term headwinds, but the strong financial position mitigates risk to the dividend. Income investors seeking high yield or rapid dividend growth may find this profile insufficient, but those prioritizing safety and total return through buybacks may view it favourably.
