GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

HCA Healthcare Inc. is the largest for-profit hospital operator in the United States. The company owns and operates over 180 hospitals and 2,300+ care sites, providing a full spectrum of medical services from emergency care to surgery. Its primary customers are patients, with revenue flowing through private insurers, government programs like Medicare/Medicaid, and direct payments. Using the GoodMoat framework, HCA's competitive advantages are primarily in scale and operational efficiency. It likely scores on criteria like Scale Privilege (massive physical infrastructure) and potentially Pricing Power (negotiating leverage with insurers). However, it may lack the high-switching-cost or network-effect advantages common in software, making a high Moat Score (5+) challenging to achieve. Key risks (Section 5 Red Flags) include Regulatory/Geopolitical Risk due to heavy reliance on government reimbursement rates and potential Macro Sensitivity from economic cycles affecting elective procedures. A value investor might be interested in its solid 9.0% profit margin, 15.8% operating margin, and strong 7.0% Free Cash Flow Yield, indicating efficient cash generation. The significant discrepancy between the current price of $484.02 and the GoodMoat Target of $1506.54 is a critical point for analysis, demanding scrutiny of the valuation model's assumptions against the company's 6.7% YoY revenue growth and the identified risks.
