Idex Corporation (IEX) Quality Analysis

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Idex Corporation demonstrates moderate quality with strong profitability but lacks the high-growth, high-return profile typical of a durable moat. Its operating margin of 20.2% and ROE of 12.0% are solid, yet revenue growth is modest and returns on capital are near its cost. The competitive position appears stable but not dominant.

Assessing Idex Corporation through the GoodMoat quality lens reveals a mixed picture. The business is fundamentally profitable, with a strong operating margin of 20.2% and a profit margin of 14.0%. However, its Return on Equity of 12.0% is below the framework's high-quality threshold of 15-20%, suggesting returns on capital are adequate but not exceptional. Free cash flow generation is present, with a 4.3% yield, but the modest revenue growth of 4.2% YoY indicates limited operating leverage or expansion momentum. The balance sheet is conservatively managed with a Debt/Equity ratio of 0.45, which is favourable. In terms of moat identification, the data suggests a niche industrial player; potential moat sources like switching costs from mission-critical fluidics and metering products or niche dominance in specific applications are plausible, but the low growth and middling ROE do not strongly evidence a wide, durable competitive advantage. Compared to peers, the P/E of 29.7x appears high relative to its growth rate, signaling the market may be pricing in more quality than the current fundamentals demonstrate. For a value investor, this points to a business of adequate quality but one that may not possess the superior economics or growth trajectory to justify a premium valuation without a wider margin of safety. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
