GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

PNC demonstrates solid financial quality with strong profitability and a healthy balance sheet, but its growth profile is moderate and its cash flow conversion appears low relative to earnings. The bank's high operating margin and positive revenue growth are favourable, while its debt level and free cash flow yield warrant closer scrutiny.

Analyzing PNC through the Quality Indicators lens reveals a mixed but generally solid picture. The bank exhibits very strong profitability with a 40.1% operating margin and a 30.0% profit margin, which are robust for the banking sector. Revenue growth of 9.6% YoY is positive and consistent. The balance sheet shows moderate leverage with a Debt/Equity ratio of 0.94, which is reasonable but not exceptionally conservative; the framework's ideal for non-financials is Debt/EBITDA <1.0x, and while not directly comparable, this level suggests manageable, not low, debt. Return on Equity of 11.4% is adequate but does not meet the framework's high-quality threshold of >15-20% for ROIC. The 5.4% Free Cash Flow Yield is positive, but when considered alongside the high operating margin, it suggests FCF conversion from earnings may be lower than the >90% target, likely due to the capital-intensive nature of banking. For Growth Assessment, the 9.6% revenue growth is sustainable but not accelerating or above the 20% high-growth benchmark. The primary growth driver appears to be general banking activity rather than a specific, durable moat advantage. Overall, PNC's financial health is stable with high profitability offset by moderate growth and cash conversion metrics typical of a large regional bank.
