GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

TJX exhibits a mixed financial profile for a value investor. While it demonstrates strong profitability and returns on equity, its valuation appears elevated and free cash flow generation is modest relative to its market cap. The balance sheet carries a significant level of debt.

Analyzing TJX through the GoodMoat Quality Indicators reveals a split picture. The company shows very strong profitability with an 8.7% profit margin and an 11.2% operating margin, and its Return on Equity of 61.0% far exceeds the 15-20% high-quality threshold, indicating excellent capital efficiency. Revenue growth of 8.5% YoY is consistent but not in the high-double-digit range often associated with premium valuations. The primary concerns lie in other quality metrics. The Free Cash Flow Yield of 2.4% is below the favourable >10-15% FCF margin guideline, suggesting cash generation is modest relative to its size. The balance sheet is a clear weak point, with a Debt/Equity ratio of 1.52, which is high and exceeds the framework's preference for low or zero debt (Debt/EBITDA < 1.0x). This indicates leverage rather than a substantial net cash position. From a Growth Assessment perspective, the 8.5% revenue growth is sustainable but not accelerating, and it is not driven by obvious technological moat advantages but rather by execution in the off-price retail sector. For a value investor, the combination of high ROE and profitability is favourable, but it is counterbalanced by high leverage, modest FCF yield, and a valuation that appears full based on a P/E of nearly 35x. The financial quality is adequate but not uniformly strong, with debt being a notable area for scrutiny. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
