Tesla Inc (TSLA) Quality Analysis

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Tesla's current financial quality is unfavourable for a value investor, with deteriorating profitability and returns on capital that fall far below high-quality thresholds. Its competitive position, while strong in brand and vertical integration, is challenged by slowing growth and intense competition.

Read full analysis
Tesla's financial quality presents significant concerns. Key profitability metrics are weak and deteriorating: a 4.0% profit margin and 4.6% operating margin are low for any industry, and the negative 3.1% YoY revenue growth indicates top-line pressure. Return on equity (ROE) of 4.6% is far below the framework's high-quality threshold of 15-20%, suggesting poor returns on shareholder capital. The free cash flow yield of 0.5% is minimal, and while the debt/equity ratio of 0.1 indicates a strong balance sheet, this is overshadowed by the poor earnings and cash generation. From a moat perspective, Tesla shows strengths in brand, vertical integration, and founder-led execution, which could contribute to a moderate moat score. However, these structural advantages are not currently translating into high-quality financial performance as defined by the framework. The negative revenue growth, low margins, and subpar returns suggest the business is struggling to monetize its competitive position effectively in the face of heightened competition and a cyclical slowdown. For a value investor focused on durable profitability and high returns on capital, Tesla's current profile does not meet the quality gate required to proceed to a valuation assessment under the GoodMoat framework. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
