Yum Brands Inc (YUM) Quality Analysis

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Yum Brands exhibits a mixed quality profile for a value investor. The business is highly profitable with exceptional operating margins, but its moderate revenue growth and high valuation relative to its cash flow generation present a challenge. Its competitive position is strong, built on a powerful franchise model and global brand scale.

Read full analysis
Yum Brands demonstrates high profitability on an operating basis, with an operating margin of 31.4% and a profit margin of 19.0%. These are strong indicators of an efficient, asset-light franchise model. However, the provided data lacks key quality metrics like Gross Margin, ROIC, and a detailed balance sheet, making a full assessment against the framework's thresholds difficult. The 6.5% YoY revenue growth is consistent but moderate, and the Free Cash Flow Yield of 3.7% (implying a P/FCF multiple of ~27x) suggests cash generation is not exceptionally high relative to its market valuation. From a moat perspective, Yum scores well on Brand & Culture (KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut) and Scale Privilege through its massive global footprint. Its franchise-heavy model creates an asset-light business with high revenue visibility from royalties, aligning with several quality indicators. The primary concern for a value investor is valuation; a P/E of 28.3x and the implied P/FCF multiple appear full for the company's growth rate, especially when compared to the GoodMoat Target price of $114.02, which suggests the market price may not offer a sufficient margin of safety. The quality is solid, but the price paid for that quality is critical.
