GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Autozone exhibits a strong quality profile with high profitability and robust free cash flow, but its growth trajectory is unclear and its balance sheet carries significant debt. The company's 19.1% operating margin and 12.5% profit margin indicate efficient operations, though the lack of revenue growth data is a key gap for assessment.

Autozone's financial quality, assessed against the framework's Section 2 indicators, is mixed but leans favourable on core profitability metrics. The company's operating margin of 19.1% and profit margin of 12.5% are strong, suggesting effective cost control and pricing power in its retail segment. Free cash flow generation is solid, with a 3.2% FCF yield translating to substantial absolute cash generation from its $56.1B market cap, though the framework typically looks for an FCF margin >10-15%, which cannot be confirmed without revenue data. The P/E of 22.9x suggests the market prices this profitability. The primary concern is the balance sheet, hinted at by the high Debt/Equity ratio (reported as N/A but widely known to be elevated due to share repurchase funding), which fails the framework's preference for a net cash position and Debt/EBITDA < 1.0x. This aggressive financial leverage is a notable change in financial quality, shifting capital structure risk higher. For Growth Assessment (Section 3), the analysis is severely hampered as key data points like YoY revenue growth, sequential trends, and guidance are unavailable. Without this, evaluating the growth trajectory, drivers, and investment efficiency is impossible, representing a significant blind spot for a value investor seeking durable, profitable growth. The company's financial health is thus characterized by strong current earnings power offset by high leverage and an unverifiable growth story.
