Autozone Inc (AZO) Valuation

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Autozone appears fairly valued relative to its GoodMoat target, offering a marginal margin of safety. Its P/E multiple is slightly below the sector average, suggesting it is not expensive. However, the valuation is not compelling enough to signal a clear bargain for a value investor seeking a significant discount.

Based on the provided data, Autozone's current price of $3,386.14 is approximately 10.7% below the GoodMoat Target of $3,791.28. According to the GoodMoat Valuation Assessment framework, this places the stock in the 'Marginal' band for Margin of Safety (MoS), which is defined as 10–20%. This indicates a modest discount to the platform's estimate of fair value, but not the more substantial buffer (20% or greater) typically sought for a 'Favourable' rating. The stock's forward P/E of 22.9x is slightly below the sector average P/E for Consumer Cyclical stocks, which is around 24.6x. This suggests the market is not pricing in excessive optimism relative to its peers. While the P/E is not at a decade-low, it appears reasonable for a company with Autozone's stable profitability, as indicated by its 19.1% operating margin. The 3.2% Free Cash Flow Yield provides a baseline return but is not exceptionally high. Overall, the valuation picture is neutral to marginally favourable. The stock is not expensive, but it also does not present as deeply undervalued. A value investor would likely require a more pronounced discount or stronger evidence of a durable moat and high-quality financials to find the current price highly attractive.
