Sysco Corp (SYY) Quality Analysis

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Sysco Corp exhibits a mixed quality profile for a value investor. While it demonstrates a strong return on equity and a stable free cash flow yield, its razor-thin profit margins, high financial leverage, and low revenue growth fall short of the high-quality thresholds outlined in the framework.

Assessing Sysco through the GoodMoat Quality Indicators reveals a business with significant strengths and weaknesses. The company's 98.2% ROE is exceptionally high, far exceeding the 15-20% benchmark for a high-quality business. However, this metric is heavily distorted by its extremely high financial leverage, as evidenced by a Debt/Equity ratio of 7.92. A more telling figure is the 3.8% operating margin, which is low and suggests a highly competitive, low-margin operation. The 2.2% profit margin and 3.0% YoY revenue growth are also low, failing to meet the framework's criteria for consistent, double-digit growth. The 4.6% FCF yield is a positive indicator of cash generation, but the business model is not asset-light, typical for a distribution company. From a moat perspective, Sysco likely scores on criteria like Scale Privilege and Niche Dominance as the largest broadline food distributor in North America, which provides cost advantages and makes it mission-critical to its customers. However, the low margins and modest growth suggest these advantages do not translate into strong pricing power or high returns on capital in a classic value-investing sense. Compared to peers in food distribution, Sysco's scale is a key differentiator, but the industry's fundamental economics limit overall quality scores. Profitability, as measured by core margins, appears stable but structurally low, not showing signs of material improvement or deterioration based on the provided data. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
