Sysco Corp (SYY) Dividends

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Sysco's dividend appears sustainable based on its free cash flow, but its high debt load and low profit margins warrant caution. The yield is moderately attractive compared to the sector, and the company has a long history of dividend growth. An income-focused investor should weigh the stable cash generation against the significant financial leverage.

Read full analysis
For an income-focused value investor, Sysco's dividend profile presents a mixed picture. The dividend yield of 2.52% is moderately attractive, generally aligning with or slightly exceeding the broader consumer defensive sector. The dividend's sustainability is supported by a free cash flow yield of 4.6%, which indicates the company generates sufficient cash to cover the payout. However, the underlying quality indicators from the framework require scrutiny. The company's balance sheet is a significant concern, with a Debt/Equity ratio of 7.9, far exceeding the framework's favourable threshold of low/zero debt (Debt/EBITDA < 1.0x). This high leverage introduces risk to all capital returns, including dividends, during economic stress. Furthermore, the profit margin of 2.2% and operating margin of 3.8% are low, suggesting the business operates on thin margins, though this is common in distribution. On a positive note, Sysco has consistently grown its dividend, demonstrating management's commitment to returning capital. The high ROE of 98.2% is largely a function of its high debt, not pure operational efficiency. In conclusion, the dividend is currently covered by free cash flow, but the payout's long-term security is heavily dependent on the company's ability to manage its substantial debt burden and maintain stable cash flows.
