GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Warner Bros. Discovery's financial quality is unfavourable for a value investor, characterized by declining revenue, thin profitability, and a heavily leveraged balance sheet. While free cash flow generation is a positive, it is insufficient to offset significant structural weaknesses.

Read full analysis
The financial health of Warner Bros. Discovery presents significant challenges. Revenue is declining, with a -5.7% YoY growth rate, which fails the framework's requirement for consistent, double-digit growth. Profitability metrics are critically weak: an operating margin of 2.0% and a profit margin of 1.9% indicate minimal earnings power, far below the high margins typical of quality businesses. The ROE of 2.0% is also well below the 15-20% threshold for high returns on capital. The balance sheet is a major concern, with a Debt/Equity ratio of 0.91, translating to substantial leverage that constrains financial flexibility. While the 4.6% Free Cash Flow Yield is a positive indicator and suggests the company can generate cash to service debt, the overall quality profile is poor. Most quality indicators from the framework—including revenue growth, margins, and ROIC—would be rated 'Weak.' The growth assessment is also unfavourable, as the negative revenue trajectory and lack of clear growth drivers contradict the framework's criteria for durable, moat-reinforcing expansion. The primary financial strength is cash generation, but it exists within a context of high debt and operational contraction.
