Bank Of America Corp (BAC) Company Profile

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Bank of America is a financial fortress with a massive scale advantage, but it operates in a highly regulated, cyclical industry. Its current valuation appears modest, with a P/E of 12.3 and a dividend yield of 2.7%, but investors must weigh this against the inherent risks of the banking business.

Bank of America Corp (BAC) is one of the world's largest diversified banks, providing a full suite of financial services. It makes money primarily through net interest income (the difference between what it earns on loans and pays on deposits) and non-interest income from fees for investment banking, wealth management, and transaction processing. Its customers span retail consumers, small businesses, large corporations, and institutional investors, creating a diversified revenue base. Using the GoodMoat framework, its primary competitive advantages are scale privilege and regulatory barriers. Its massive $2.9 trillion asset base and nationwide branch network create significant cost and efficiency advantages, while the stringent regulatory environment for large banks acts as a formidable barrier to new entrants. However, it scores lower on other moat criteria like proprietary data or high switching costs for basic retail banking. Key risks, per Section 5 of the framework, include high macro sensitivity, as its performance is tightly linked to interest rates and economic cycles, and regulatory/geopolitical risk. The data shows a Debt/Equity ratio of 2.34, which is standard for banks but indicates leverage, and an ROE of 10.1%, which is below the 15-20% high-quality threshold for other industries. A value investor might find the low P/E of 12.3 and stable dividend yield of 2.7% attractive for a business of its scale, but must accept that it is a cyclical operator in a commodity-like industry rather than a high-return, wide-moat compounder.
