Bank Of America Corp (BAC) Stock Analysis

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Bank of America is a high-quality, large-scale financial institution with a durable competitive moat, but its current valuation appears to be fairly priced, offering a limited margin of safety for a classic value investor. The business benefits from significant scale, brand power, and regulatory barriers. Further investigation hinges on whether its modest valuation discount is sufficient given its steady, moderate-growth profile.

Bank of America Corp (BAC) is one of the world's largest diversified financial institutions, providing a full suite of banking, investment, and asset management services to consumers, corporations, and institutions. Applying the GoodMoat framework, it demonstrates a durable competitive advantage, scoring well in key moat criteria: it possesses immense Scale Privilege through its national branch network and deposit base, significant Brand & Culture recognition, and high Regulatory Barriers to entry in its core banking operations. Its role as a systemically important financial institution further entrenches its position. On quality, it shows strong fundamentals with a solid ROE of 10.1%, a robust operating margin of 38.3%, and a healthy profit margin of 27.0%, though its debt/equity ratio of 2.34 is typical for a leveraged banking model. The company passes the initial Moat & Quality Gate for further analysis. On valuation, the stock trades at a P/E of 12.25 and offers a dividend yield of 2.69%. While not expensive, the provided GoodMoat Target of $110.50 implies a massive margin of safety that is inconsistent with the company's current market price and sector multiples, suggesting the target may be an outlier or based on a different methodology. A standard bank analysis using Price-to-Book (P/B) as per Sector-Specific Rules would be more appropriate. For a value investor, BAC represents a high-quality business likely trading near its fair value, making the current setup more 'with caution' than 'favourable' unless a deeper discount to tangible book value emerges. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
