Dominion Energy Inc (D) Stock Analysis

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Dominion Energy, a regulated electric utility, appears to have a weak competitive moat and concerning quality metrics, failing the initial gate of the GoodMoat framework. While its dividend yield of 4.40% may be attractive, the stock's price is above the GoodMoat Target of $50.95, and key financials like a negative FCF Yield of -14.1% raise significant red flags.

Read full analysis
Dominion Energy Inc operates as a regulated electric utility, a business model characterized by stable, government-granted monopolies in its service territories. Applying the GoodMoat framework's Moat Identification (Section 1), the company's primary advantage stems from Regulatory Barriers, a single criterion. It lacks the network effects, high switching costs, or proprietary technology typical of a durable moat, resulting in a very low Moat Score, likely below the required threshold of 5 to proceed with analysis. The Quality Indicators are also unfavourable. While the Operating Margin of 26.7% is solid, the company shows a negative Free Cash Flow Yield of -14.1%, which is a critical weakness against the framework's >10-15% FCF margin target. The Debt/Equity ratio of 1.68 is high, and the asset-heavy model is the opposite of the asset-light preference. Following the Decision Framework (Section 6), the low Moat Score and multiple weak quality metrics suggest the business fails the initial 'Moat & Quality Gate,' halting further valuation analysis. The current price of $60.66 is above the GoodMoat Target of $50.95, indicating an unfavourable valuation. For a value investor, the combination of a weak moat, poor cash flow generation, high leverage, and a premium price makes this a low-priority candidate for further investigation without a significant change in fundamentals or price.
