GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Dominion Energy's financial quality is unfavourable for a value investor, primarily due to its negative free cash flow and high debt load. While revenue growth and operating margins appear strong, the underlying cash generation and balance sheet health raise significant concerns.

Read full analysis
Dominion Energy's financial profile presents a mixed but ultimately concerning picture. The company shows a robust 20.4% YoY revenue growth and a healthy 26.7% operating margin, which are positive indicators. However, the quality assessment reveals critical weaknesses. Most notably, the Free Cash Flow (FCF) Yield is deeply negative at -14.1%, indicating the company is not generating cash after capital expenditures, which is a major red flag for value investors who prioritize cash generation. The balance sheet is also a significant concern, with a Debt/Equity ratio of 1.68, far exceeding the framework's favourable threshold of less than 1.0. This high leverage increases financial risk, especially in a capital-intensive utility sector. The Return on Equity (ROE) of 10.2% is below the framework's high-quality benchmark of 15-20%. While the 4.40% dividend yield is attractive, it is supported by earnings rather than free cash flow, which could be unsustainable given the current FCF profile. The growth appears driven by capital projects rather than durable moat advantages, and the negative FCF suggests low investment efficiency. Overall, the financial health is unfavourable, dominated by weak cash flow and a leveraged balance sheet. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
