GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Nike's financial quality is mixed, showing strong profitability and a healthy balance sheet but concerning stagnation in revenue growth and potential margin pressure. The company generates solid free cash flow and maintains a robust return on equity, yet the near-zero top-line growth and declining operating margin require close monitoring.

Nike's financial health presents a classic case of a mature, high-quality brand facing growth headwinds. From a quality perspective, the company's 19.1% ROE is strong and exceeds the framework's 15-20% high-return threshold, indicating efficient use of capital. Free cash flow generation is also solid, with a 4.2% FCF yield suggesting healthy cash conversion, though we lack the FCF margin percentage to fully assess it against the >10-15% benchmark. The balance sheet is healthy with a Debt/Equity ratio of 0.83, which is manageable and below the concerning level of 1.0x Debt/EBITDA implied by the framework. However, the growth assessment reveals significant challenges. Revenue growth YoY of just 0.6% is a stark contrast to the framework's preference for consistent, double-digit growth, indicating stagnation. More critically, the operating margin of 8.0% is notably lower than the profit margin of 5.4%, suggesting significant non-operating expenses or one-time items are impacting bottom-line profitability. This margin compression, if sustained, would be a red flag. While the dividend yield of 2.94% and strong ROE point to shareholder-friendly characteristics, the core engine of profitable revenue expansion appears to be sputtering. The valuation, with a P/E over 31, seems to price in a recovery that the current financials do not yet support. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
