Bath & Body Works Inc (BBWI) Quality Analysis

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Bath & Body Works exhibits a mixed quality profile with very strong cash generation but faces significant competitive and operational headwinds. Its low P/E and high free cash flow yield suggest a deeply discounted price, but the business lacks a durable competitive moat, scoring low on the framework's criteria.

Read full analysis
Assessing Bath & Body Works through the GoodMoat framework reveals a business with pockets of high profitability but significant quality concerns. The company's operating margin of 15.4% and profit margin of 8.9% are respectable for a retailer. The standout metric is a free cash flow yield of 23.2%, which far exceeds the framework's 10-15% threshold for a strong FCF margin and indicates exceptional cash generation relative to its market price. However, the low P/E of 5.7x, while appearing cheap, may reflect market concerns about the sustainability of its earnings power. In terms of competitive moat, the company scores poorly. It lacks clear evidence of network effects, high switching costs, proprietary data, or significant scale privilege that would protect it from intense competition in the fragrance and body care space. Its brand, while strong, does not appear to have an insurmountable lead over rivals, and the risk of disruption from larger retailers and direct-to-consumer brands is material. The business model is also inherently asset-heavy with a large physical store footprint, contrasting with the framework's preference for asset-light models. Overall, the quality is bifurcated: financial metrics related to current cash flow are strong, but the underlying competitive position and long-term durability are unfavourable.
