Walt Disney Co (The) (DIS) Dividends

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Disney's dividend is currently suspended, with capital being aggressively reinvested into the business. For an income-focused investor, this is an unfavourable profile, but the company's strong free cash flow yield and improving balance sheet suggest the capacity to reinstate a dividend in the future.

Read full analysis
Walt Disney Co does not currently pay a dividend, having suspended it in 2020 to preserve capital. For an income-focused value investor, this is a clear negative. The primary question is whether the company is reinvesting that capital effectively instead. Analyzing the Quality Indicators from the framework provides context. Disney's free cash flow yield of 5.9% is a strong signal of underlying cash generation, comfortably exceeding the framework's favourable threshold of a >10-15% FCF margin when expressed as a percentage of the stock price. This indicates the business has the fundamental capacity to support a future payout. The balance sheet shows a moderate Debt/Equity ratio of 0.38, which is below the framework's cautionary level of 1.0x Debt/EBITDA, suggesting a manageable leverage position that is not a barrier to reinstatement. The capital is being directed towards heavy investments in streaming content and park experiences, aiming to drive long-term growth and profitability. While the dividend is absent today, the company's improving financial health—evidenced by a 12.8% profit margin and positive free cash flow—means the decision to pay a dividend is strategic, not due to an inability to fund it. The yield of 1.05% shown in the data is a trailing figure and not current. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
