GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Disney's financial quality is mixed, showing moderate profitability and a healthy balance sheet but weak growth and inconsistent cash flow. The company's 5.2% revenue growth and 5.9% FCF yield indicate a mature, stable business rather than a high-growth one. While leverage is manageable, the overall financial profile is adequate but not exceptional for a value investor seeking strong, durable quality.

Disney's financial health presents a nuanced picture for a value investor. On quality indicators, profitability is moderate but not stellar: an operating margin of 13.8% and ROE of 11.2% fall below the framework's high-quality thresholds of expanding margins and ROIC sustainably above 15-20%. The 5.9% free cash flow yield is a positive signal, suggesting the market price is supported by cash generation, though the framework looks for a >10-15% FCF margin for high quality. The balance sheet is a relative strength, with a Debt/Equity ratio of 0.38 indicating manageable leverage, well below the concerning level of 1.0x Debt/EBITDA. The growth assessment, however, is unfavourable. Revenue growth of 5.2% YoY is far from the consistent, double-digit growth the framework associates with quality companies, and it does not suggest a trajectory of accelerating or sustained high growth above 20%. This paints Disney as a large, mature enterprise with stable but slow expansion, reliant on execution and cyclical upturns rather than durable, high-moat-driven growth. The financial quality is adequate but lacks the high returns on capital and robust growth profile that define top-tier compounders. Analysis based on data as of 2024-07-20.
