Apple Inc (AAPL) Dividends

GoodMoat Analysis

Based on data as of March 26, 2026

Apple's dividend is highly sustainable due to its massive free cash flow and low payout ratio, but the yield is very low for an income-focused investor. The company prioritizes share buybacks over dividend growth, which is a rational capital allocation choice given its strong balance sheet and high returns.

Read full analysis
For an income-focused value investor, Apple's dividend profile presents a trade-off between exceptional safety and modest income generation. The dividend's sustainability is extremely strong. The company's payout ratio is low, estimated at roughly 15-20% of its earnings per share of $7.46, leaving a vast buffer. This is supported by Apple's robust free cash flow generation, with a FCF yield of 2.6%. While this yield is low, it represents over $96 billion in annual FCF, which is more than sufficient to cover the dividend obligation many times over. The current dividend yield of 0.41% is significantly below the broader technology sector average, making it unattractive for investors seeking high current income. Apple has a history of growing its dividend, but the primary use of its prodigious cash flow is aggressive share repurchases. This aligns with the Quality Indicators in the framework, which highlight a strong balance sheet (though Debt/Equity of 1.34 indicates leverage, it is manageable given the cash pile) and high ROE of 159.7%. Management's capital allocation prioritizes returning value via buybacks, which is rational given the high returns on retained capital, but it results in a low and slowly growing yield. The dividend is secure, but it is a minor component of total return expectations. Analysis based on data as of 2024-05-15.
